Your slot. Your key.
How it works
How does it work?
SLAYRAD™ is a locking stainless steel box that slides into your own compartment of a cluster mailbox. Its side plates bond to the compartment walls with 3M structural tape, so nothing is drilled. Your carrier drops mail through the 3/4 × 9 in slot as usual, and only your key opens the door. It's built to deter mail theft: if someone opens the cluster's main door, your mail is still behind a second locked door.
Fit
Will it fit my mailbox?
SLAYRAD™ fits standard 4C wall-unit compartments and pedestal cluster boxes about 12 in wide, 3 in tall and 15 in deep. That is the common size at apartments, HOAs, and newer neighborhoods. Measure the inside of your compartment before ordering. It does not fit curbside post-mount boxes or rural-route boxes — USPS prohibits inserts there.
What if my compartment is a different size?
Email us the inside dimensions at sales@originalslayrad.com.
Installation
Do I need tools?
Here's what you need.
- A 3/8 in or crescent wrench (not included) — for the two hinge nuts
- The two alcohol pads that come in the box
- Your hands — about 20 lb of press on each side plate
Do I have to modify the cluster unit?
No. The insert sits inside your compartment. Nothing is drilled or cut — the side plates bond to the compartment walls with 3M structural tape, so removing it later may leave adhesive residue. Never open or touch the unit's master lock side — that's USPS property.
Security
What does it protect against?
With SLAYRAD™, even with the entire mailbox cluster open, the mail in a SLAYRAD™ stays exactly as it should. Protected. Waiting for you to pick it up. They'd have to take the entire cluster to get to your mail.
Can the lock be picked or drilled?
The cylinder is a Gilbarco 500S — the same lock used on the door of a Gilbarco Encore fuel dispenser. Lost a key? Order a Lock Replacement Kit from our Parts page: a new lock and new keys, so the lost key no longer fits. No lock is 100% theft-proof; SLAYRAD™ is built to make your mail the hardest target on the block.
Does it hold packages?
No. It holds letters, 9 × 12 envelopes, magazines and catalogs. Packages still go where they went before.
What about packages?
SLAYRAD™ holds letters and flats, not packages — the compartment is only about 3 in tall. Packages go where they already go: the cluster unit's parcel locker. Your carrier puts the package in the locker and drops that locker's key into your compartment. With SLAYRAD™ installed, the key drops through the slot and is locked inside with your mail — the key and its tag both pass through.
Is it allowed?
Is a locked insert allowed?
Yes. No USPS rule prohibits it, and you don't need USPS permission. The rule that applies is Postal Operations Manual §632.21: "If customers place locks on their receptacles, the receptacles must have slots large enough to accommodate their normal daily mail volume so that delivery may be made by the carrier without using a key." SLAYRAD™ needs no key — your carrier never touches one. Whether your daily mail fits the 3/4 × 9 in slot depends on your mail volume; see "Does it hold packages?" above. USPS does prohibit inserts on curbside and rural-route boxes (§632.527); SLAYRAD™ is for cluster units only.
Do I need permission from my HOA or landlord?
No. The compartment is assigned to you. You don't need permission to protect your own mail and property inside it, and nothing on the cluster unit itself changes.
Could my carrier refuse to deliver?
A postmaster can withhold delivery from a receptacle that doesn't meet USPS rules. Because SLAYRAD™ needs no key, it passes the rule's main test. If a carrier thinks a box isn't working, they report it. The postmaster then sends PS Form 4056, "Your Mailbox Needs Attention," with about 30 days' written notice before mail is held at the post office. A single envelope that doesn't fit is not a refusal; a compartment the carrier can't load is. If you get a Form 4056, email us the same day.
Ordering
How much is shipping?
Free on every order, inserts and parts, to the continental United States. Orders ship in 1–3 business days. We do not ship outside the US at this time.
Can I return it?
Yes — 30 days, unopened, 15% restocking fee. Once it is installed it cannot be returned, because the plates bond to your compartment wall. An installed unit that fails is a warranty claim instead, and that is covered. Items damaged in shipping or defective on arrival get a full refund, no fee.
Warranty
What's the warranty?
Three years against manufacturing defects, from the day it arrives. If a plate, hinge, lock or key fails because of how it was made, we replace it at no cost and you do not ship anything back. It does not cover damage from a break-in attempt, a non-standard compartment, or removal and reinstallation. Email us your lock number to make a claim.
